Forward Arm and Hand Drill

Purpose
  • Develop an awareness of clubface position.
  • Strengthen leading arm and wrist.
  • Demonstrate firm leading wrist through impact.
  • Show leading shoulder as primary pivot point.
Club
  • Pitching wedge or 9 iron.
Ball position
  • No ball.
Swing length
  • Leading arm swings back until clubhead is in line with trailing foot.
  • Leading arm swings forward until club and leading arm are parallel with leading leg. Leading arm is in line with leading leg.
Steps
  • Assume setup.
  • Position club in middle of stance right of tee.
  • Lift the club so that it is not resting on ground.
  • Using a very short swing, move leading arm back and forward with no wrist break brushing tee on forward swing.
  • During entire drill leading arm stays within width of body and body has no weight shift or motion.
  • At completion of swing, hold finish position for a count of three and go over these following checkpoints:
    1. Leading arm and club maintain a straight line relationship.
    2. Back of leading hand and clubface stay square to target line.
    3. Body square to target line.
    4. Spine tilt to trailing side maintained.
    5. Leading knee over leading foot. Weight predominantly on leading side.
    6. Both feet flat on the ground.
Variations
  • For more leading arm and wrist strength grip down on the club shaft.
